Main Electrical Service FAQs

If you have any questions about upgrading your main electrical panel, please give our friendly specialists a call. Here are some common questions our customers ask.

What does my electrical panel do?

Your main electrical service panel regulates electricity between the public electrical grid and electrical circuits in your home. Also called a breaker box, this main panel controls how much power each circuit gets and acts as a safety when there is an irregular current.

An integral part of any home’s electrical system, the main service panel is arguably the most crucial component of a safely wired home.

The most obvious clue that a main panel isn’t performing right is that electrical power shuts off unexpectedly. If you frequently experience tripped circuits, it could indicate an over-serviced panel.

These other signs may indicate a problem with your electrical panel. Schedule electrical service immediately if you notice your main service overheating, smoking, or making strange sounds.

To answer this question, you must first determine your electrical demands. Decades ago, a 100 amp panel was sufficient for most homes. But the trends towards electrical energy and the increased number of everyday electronic devices mean that your household needs more power!

If your home has any of the following features, at least a 200 amp main service panel is a wise choice:

  • Electric Vehicle
  • Central Air Conditioner
  • Electric Heating System (Heat Pump)
  • Hot Tub
  • Solar Panels
  • More than 2000 sq. ft

The recommended lifespan for most electrical panels is 25 years. After years of use, electrical components and wires erode and become brittle. Eventually, an old main service panel becomes an electrical fire safety risk.

If you’re unsure how old your main service panel is, call an electrician to inspect your breaker box and main service. Homes with an electrical panel older than 5 years should schedule an annual electrical inspection.
