In the wake of the IPCC’s harrowing report on the severity of climate change and their subsequent call to action, many people are searching for ways to implement greener practices in their day-to-day lives. While most municipalities have programs for recycling paper and plastic, or safely disposing of harmful chemicals, did you know that there are planet-safe ways to get rid of your unused electronic devices?
Our high-tech lives require a lot of up-to-date devices including tablets, smartphones, and laptops. Because of this, our devices can become obsolete in a short amount of time. These outdated electronics fill our landfills and leach harmful chemicals and materials into the ground or ocean below.
Donate
In many cases, these gadgets still work. If this is the case, there are several local charities and nonprofits which will accept them as donations. Think of all the schools that can’t afford to provide their students with up-to-date technology. There are programs that rely on the kind donations of others to ensure that every child has access to technology. Before donating, clear all of your personal data off of the device, and then you can rest easy knowing that your gadget is going out into the world to make a difference in someone’s life.
Return
Electronic device not working or on its last legs? Check to see if the manufacturer or retailer offers a buyback or recycling program. Here in Calgary, companies such as Samsung, BestBuy, and Staples all offer trade-in programs for their customers. With a little bit of research, you can find out whether or not you can send your gadgets back to where they came from. Manufacturers will break down these worn-out devices and either give them new life, or use their parts in other electronics.
Recycle
If those options don’t work for you, electronic devices can be recycled! Unlike paper and plastic, your gadgets cannot simply be put in your blue bin to be taken to the recycling facility and taken care of. However, there are several drop-off locations in Calgary that will accept your used electronics. In a similar way to product manufacturers, recycling your devices can result in their repair or breakdown and distribution into other products.
Disposing of your electronics is an uncomplicated and effective way to keep harmful substances out of landfills and our technology in the hands of people who need it.
